Pool Decks: Size Does Matter

How do you determine the size of your deck? You start by evaluating yard size and pool placement. Then you need to decide if you want to add patio furniture, an outdoor kitchen or grill area to your backyard oasis. You’ll also need to check with municipalities about property lines. Once all these things are figured out, you can start designing the pool you’ve always wanted.

Key point: The area around your pool should be at least 4' wide on all sides. This allows for safety and provides an adequate surface for entering and exiting your swimming pool. If you want an area to relax and lounge near the pool, the minimum deck size needs to be 12’ X 12’.  This will comfortably accommodate 8 people and pool furniture. Figure on the width of your pool, plus 8' for the perimeter deck on either side. Keep in mind, though, if you have a patio area somewhere else on your property, you may not need more than the 4' perimeter deck. It's all about lifestyle; so just be certain to build a pool deck that’s safe and is large enough for your family to enjoy all summer long.
