5 Material Options for Pool Decking

Consider all of the material options you have in choosing the perfect pool decking.

The pool decking you choose for your outdoor pool will make all the difference in the aesthetic quality of your pool area. There are many beautiful choice in pool decking today, allowing you to find the material that will best fit your climate, budget and style. However, a multitude of selections can also make it difficult to know which one will suit your outdoor space the best.  Take a look into the various types of pool decking available so you can find the perfect design for your pool.

Concrete Pool Decking

Concrete is probably the most popular type of pool decking today, due to its durability and price. Thanks to the many advances in decorative concrete, a pool deck constructed of this material can take on almost any shape, color and design. You can choose a stamped concrete surface to resemble flagstone or tile. Or you can opt for a dyed concrete for a brilliant dash of color in almost any hue.

Ceramic Tile for Pool Decking

Ceramic tile is a bit pricier than concrete, but it comes in nearly as many colors and can add a beautiful, high end touch to your pool area. For a custom look, try a border of tile in a contrasting color to the rest of the pool decking or a mosaic pattern with a variety of coordinating hues. You can also choose tiles with designs to add interest and pattern to your pool area.

Brick Pool Decking

Brick offers a lovely, traditional touch to your pool area and can be especially beautiful behind a brick home. The only drawback to brick is that it gets very hot in the sun, making it a potentially uncomfortable option for use in the middle of the day. They may not be a good choice for warmer climates for the same reason.

Wood and Composite Pool Decking

Wood is especially useful for above ground pools because it can be built up to whatever level you need. However, wood does require a fair amount of maintenance, like annual staining and sealing, to keep it looking its best. Another option with a similar look is composite decking, which comes in a wider range of styles and colors and it is much easier to maintain. It is also more costly than a wood decking of the same design.

Stone Pool Decking

Stone is one of the priciest options for pool decking, but it is also one of the most beautiful. Stone decks can range from the natural look of flagstone to the elegant appearance of marble. Most people choose porous stone because it doesn't get slippery when wet. However, choosing a rougher finish on marble or granite can also make the surface safer when it is wet.

With so many options to choose from, it may seem challenging to choose just one for your pool. However, if you weigh the color options and styles against cost and safety, you are sure to find a decking material that will look beautiful and meet the needs of your family.
