4 Fun Tips for Throwing a Pool Party

Host the best pool parties in your neighborhood with these fun tips.

I figured the neighbors would be interested in the new addition to our backyard, but I didn't realize just how popular that pool would make us. Now, everyone on our street wants a chance to come over and swim! At first, the demand was a little irritating, especially when the kids from across the street showed up on our doorstep one Saturday morning sporting bathing suits and floaties. We weren't sure how to handle the interruptions without appearing unfriendly.

So we finally came up with a solution. Once or twice a summer, we throw a magnificent pool party and invite our friends and neighbors over for some fun. Even the ones that don't swim show up for the occasion, because we always have the best food and drinks on the block. The pool parties have reduced the amount of unscheduled visits we get, although those two kids across the street still show up like clockwork two or three Saturday mornings a month!

Food and Drinks

The first component to any successful party is the right mix of food and drink. Barbecues are particularly enjoyable at a pool party, with hamburgers, hotdogs and bratwurst to go around. You can also roast ears of corn and veggie kabobs to go on the side of your meats. Prepare a few salads ahead of time, so you can enjoy time with your guests rather than get stuck in your kitchen during all the fun.

Decorations

There are plenty of great choices in luau décor, from inflatable palm trees to your own private tiki bar. Strings of white Christmas lights in the trees or along the roof of your gazebo also add a festive touch. Add lighting to your pool area with floating LED lights of assorted tropical colors. A few tiki torches around the perimeter of your pool or patio also add light and ambiance to your backyard celebration.

Toys

Pool toys are a must for the swimmers in your crowd. Stock your pool area with plenty of noodles and other floating devices. You may also want to keep a few extra pairs of goggles and some towels nearby for guests who might forget to bring their own. Add a water volleyball or basketball game that will delight young and old alike. You can also place a bucket of squirt guns nearby, and perhaps a horseshoe pit for those that prefer their fun and games on dry land.

Safety

Safety is paramount when planning a pool party, particularly when children are included. Make sure a phone is easily accessible outdoors, with emergency numbers nearby just in case. If you will be having a number of children at your party, consider setting specific times for kids to be in the pool to ensure proper supervision is available. Drinking and swimming do not mix, so limit the amount of alcohol you serve at your pool party to prevent unnecessary accidents.

A pool party is a great way to let friends and neighbors partake in the fun of your outdoor oasis. With the right food, decorations and entertainment, your pool parties will be events the neighborhood will relish every summer.
